Íslandsklukkan '24

The Icelandic bell was rung at the beginning of the school year.
Áslaug Ásgeirsdóttir, the rector, began by addressing the assembly, and then the bell was rung.
Gerður Björk Sigurðardóttir, a freshman in nursing, rang the Icelandic bell this year, striking it 24 times—one for each year since the year 2000.

Íslandsklukkan
Kristinn E. Hrafnsson is the creator of the artwork "Íslandsklukkan," which was a gift from the town to its residents on the occasion of a Christian festival anniversary, in memory of the discovery of lands in the Western Hemisphere. On December 1, 2001, Kristján Þór Júlíusson, the then Mayor of Akureyri, presented the Icelandic bell to the University of Akureyri for use. The work "refers to the vigilance that characterizes good academic people."
Since the Icelandic bell was installed on the university campus, it has become a tradition to ring the bell at the beginning of the school year.
